The Phili 76ers have been in the bottem of ticket sales for quite some time and when I say bottem I mean the BOTTEM! They less than 70% home capacity and that's worse than the LeBron-less Cavaliers! I could see if we were talking about a small market city like Memphis or Sacramento but Phili other sports teams (Eagles, Flyers, and Phillies) all enjoy sellouts to play in front of but not the Sixers! They pray for 16K in an arena that holds 20!
Now, the problem with these numbers is that the team is in the playoffs hunt and have an above 500 record. New head coach Doug Collins has them playing team basketball (unlike ballhogging Iverson) and its a good brand of hoops to watch. The market has shown that the money is there but the franchise continues to lose money because of its tickets sales. Now this wouldnt be such an issue if they were in New Orleans or Sacramento but come on this is Phili, the blue coller city that is known for having die-hard loyalty to their teams. So whats the problem? Simple Marketing.
There is a great article that discusses how Pat "Super Dave" Croce was the marketing brain behind the Iverson years of ticket sellouts! He used every medium from radio to T.V. to halftime entertainment to get "butts in seats" and that is the main reason why the Well Fargo Arena is empty these days. Sports Marketing is about giving fans a reason to like you. To want to see you. To want to be apart of you. Sure, having a superstar with personality makes it easier but that does not excludes the franchise from doing their job in promoting the team.
Account Executive in tickets sales and corporate sales need the V.P. of Marketing to do his job of helping promote the franchise to increase the teams awareness and help them sell tickets. Now, this does not mean that A.E.s dont have to work but I can only imagine whats is like to cold call a potential customer and hear how they rather catch the highlights on ESPN rather than experience the game in person and money is least of their worries (as well as the team record).
I definitely will keep an eye on this and can only hope for the A.E.s sake that the Sixers get it together but I know the balance sheet is just as depressing as the attendance of their playoffs bound team!
