Craig Calcaterra tweets that the recent hysteria regarding empty seats at baseball games should be called “low-attendance porn”. Let's forget about the weather, kids still in school, whatever - and look at the "problem".
Darren Rovell at CNBC and Maury Brown at the BizofBaseball site have been rather over the top in their incessant examination of Major League Baseball attendance (and the lack thereof) in the first two months of the 2011 season. Rovell’s twitter site has been deluged with fans showing empty sections of stadia during games played in April and May.
Rovell made some excellent points in a piece in April when he discussed the rise of the secondary ticket market and its effect on fans and the capacity of the modern ballpark.
Thanks to the secondary market, the idea of the season ticket is dead and games are not priced right by the teams. The biggest problem might be that the season is too long.
