The Atlanta Thrashers....Trash Or Treasure?

The Atlanta Thrashers’ sale and move to Winnipeg hasn’t been finalized, but Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is talking as if losing the team is inevitable.

The Thrashers’ exit “is going to hurt the city, but we will withstand it just fine,” Reed said Tuesday.

“I think anytime we lose a major sports franchise, it is tough. . . . It’s not a lack of the city being willing to step up and do something about it. It is (the absence of) a partner with deep enough pockets to be willing to sustain pretty significant losses.”

The ownership group, led by Bruce Levenson and Michael Gearon Jr., spent Tuesday in more talks with True North Sports and Entertainment, which would relocate the team to Winnipeg.

There was no further word on when the sale might be completed, though Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz was quoted saying he expected it to be done this week.
