Drawing about 25,000 fans per game, the L.A. Galaxy boasts the second-highest attendance in Major League Soccer this year.
But the team aspires to attract more college students, especially from California State University, Dominguez Hills, in Carson, given how the stadium is literally located on campus.
This weekend, two Dominguez Hills marketing students aim to score some business points for the team by ushering in a few of their own.
Hired by the Home Depot Center as interns, seniors Robert Aragon and Melissa Velasco have been given an important real-world assignment. The students have spearheaded the marketing effort for Saturday's Galaxy game against Sporting Kansas City.
Their primary mission: bring as many of their CSU Dominguez Hills peers as possible to Saturday night's game, dubbed "Toro Night" in honor of the school's nickname.
"I think students have been waiting for something like this," said Velasco, herself a former Dominguez Hills volleyball player. "It's never been done before. It's never been specialized toward the student body or anything."
