NFL Jaguars And Toronto? Let the Conversations Begin

Could the Jacksonville Jaguars be headed north of the border? Possibly, if one Canadian politician gets his way.

According to a report at The Score.com, Toronto councilor Doug Ford has talked with NFL Canada about bringing a team to Toronto, and according to Ford, if an existing team does relocate north of the border, the Jaguars are the "number one" option in play.

In The Score's report, Ford described Toronto as being "right up there on the list" of cities awaiting NFL teams.

"They have to take care of the problem in Los Angeles first," Ford said. "Two teams are kind of in play here: Jacksonville's number one; New Orleans is the other. So there's two teams. Once they take care of Los Angeles, we're going to fly over to New York, set up a meeting with [NFL commissioner Roger] Goodell and give him our pitch."

Despite their short existence in the NFL, the Jaguars, who finished 8-8 in 2010, have long been the subject of relocation rumors.

In 1995, Jacksonville and the Carolina Panthers became the NFL's first expansion teams since the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the league in 1976, and in just their second year in the league, the Jaguars reached the AFC Championship Game, where they lost to the New England Patriots.

Jacksonville went on to make the playoffs in each of the next three years, but have only made the playoffs twice in the last 11 seasons, winning just one playoff game.

In recent years, slumping ticket sales and dwindling interest in the club have led some to speculate Jags owner Wayne Weaver could be interested in selling the team. However, in 2008, Weaver told the Associated Press emphatically he was not interested in selling
